Flowers always remain centre of attraction in human life. Global scenario is that the potted and cut flowers earned enormous business worth billions of dollars annually. Holland is one of the biggest beneficiaries because of the progress in the floricultural industry.

The market of cut flowers in European countries, Middle East and Far East has grown quite markedly in the recent years. Keeping in view the new strategic marketing different flowers varieties and species are being grown in Pakistan under natural conditions and green houses.

These are roses:
(ranuculus); petuniae: (rose picotee); tulips drawin mixed: hyacints mixed: carnation, chrysanthemum, golden rose, aster, gerbera, gladiclus, anthorium, tuberose, orchid, marigold and other flowers. The main potential season of supply for Pakistan is the period November to May because competition during this period of the year is significantly reduce. Pakistan, therefore, has a seasonal advantage in producing and supplying the best quality of roses during the months of winter of the European countries or any other overseas markets.

The demand of cut flowers in the European market is at its peak during several special festivals/ceremonies occasions, all of which fall during November – May period. These are:

  • Christmas Day (December)

  • New Year (January)

  • Valentine’s Day (February)

  • Mothers Day (March or April)

The unique aspect of flowers, it is useful both in fresh and dried conditions. In fresh condition flowers are used in garlands, bouquets, wreaths and in dried condition they are a natural source of essence to be used in various food products.
